According to foreign media reports on May 24, a recent study by American scientists shows that e-cigarettes do not quit better than traditional smoking cessation tools, and the only thing that really helps is paying people to quit.
This research was published in the internationally renowned medical journal New England Journal of Medicine on May 23, and was led by Dr. Scott Halpern of the University of Pennsylvania. He concluded: “Providing e-cigarettes has not reduced the number of smokers, in fact it has no use. The best way to help them quit is to give them money.”
Quit smoking is the best!
In this study, smokers were divided into 5 groups. The first group had only the most common smoking cessation care, including telling smokers the benefits of quitting and sending encouragement text messages. The second group provided some smoking cessation drugs such as nicotine patches, Chantix or Zyban. Wait, if these drugs fail, e-cigarettes will be added; Group 3 provides free e-cigarettes, but you don’t need to try other methods first; Group 4, allows smokers to successfully quit smoking for 6 months before getting smoking cessation tools Reimbursement and a $ 600 reward; the fifth group provided smokers with a free smoking cessation tool and $ 600 at the beginning of the study, but if smoking cessation failed, they had to return it.
The results showed that only 0.1% of smokers in the general care group successfully quit smoking, and the success rates of the other groups ranged from 0.5% to 3%. Among them, the group that provided cash incentives performed the best, and there was not much difference between the other groups.
Is it expensive to provide cash rewards to smokers? Scientists carefully calculated the costs and benefits and found that the average cost of providing cash incentives to quit smokers is still lower than e-cigarettes or traditional methods of quitting.
Smoking is harmful to health
I also questioned the research. David Abrams, a former tobacco researcher at the National Institutes of Health, believes that because researchers don’t know how many people in each group actually use smoking cessation tools, this conclusion is not rigorous. He also insisted that e-cigarettes are the most effective way to help people quit smoking.
Do you smoke? I wonder what do you think is the most effective way to quit smoking? Comments are welcome to share your smoking cessation stories and opinions.
